Legend is a 1985 British-American fantasy adventure film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry, David Bennent, Alice Playten, Billy Barty, Cork Hubbert, and Annabelle Lanyon. It is a darker fairy tale and has been described as a return to more original, sometimes disturbing, fables, from the oral tradition of ancient times before reading and writing were widespread.[2][3]
Although not a commercial success when first released, it won the British Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Cinematography in 1985 for cinematographer Alex Thomson,[4] as well as being nominated for multiple awards: Academy Award for Best Makeup; Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films Saturn Award for Best Makeup; BAFTA Awards for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup Artist, Best Special Visual Effects; DVD Exclusive Awards; and Young Artist Awards.[5] Since its premiere and the subsequent release of the Director's Cut edition, the film has become a cult classic
Plot[edit]
"Once, long ago", the ancient Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry) laments his isolation in the shadows before sensing the presence of two unicorns who safeguard the Power of Light. Darkness instructs Blix and his fellow goblins to kill the unicorns and bring him their horns so he can roam the world freely after it becomes an eternal night of cold darkness. Meanwhile, Princess Lili (Mia Sara) goes alone to the forest to meet her friend Jack (Tom Cruise), a forest dweller who teaches her the languages of animals before showing her the unicorns who have arrived to the forest. Against Jack's pleas, Lili approaches the stallion before the unicorn is hit by a poisoned dart from Blix's blowpipe. The unicorns bolt, and Lili makes light of Jack's fears and sets him a challenge by throwing her ring into a pond, declaring she will marry whoever finds it. But as the stallion dies from the poison with the goblins taking his horn, the pond freezes over with Lili running off in terror before Jack manages to break free. Taking refuge in a frozen cottage, Lily hides when the goblins arrive and overhears them crowing how she "led the beasts to bay" as she follows them while vowing to make it right. Eventually, having watched the Blix's armored comrade Blunder being disposed of, Lily overhears the goblins being ordered to hunt down the mare.
Back in the forest, Jack encounters the elf Honeythorn Gump (David Bennent, voiced by Alice Playten) who interrogates him over what transpired yet forgives the human once explaining that he showed Lili the Unicorns out of love. Joined by Gump, the fairy Oona (Annabelle Lanyon), and the dwarves Brown Tom and Screwball (Cork Hubbert and Billy Barty), Jack searches for Lili before coming across the lifeless stallion and his mate. Knowing that the horn must be recovered and returned to the stallion for the world to return to normal, Jack is led by Gump and the others to obtain weapons while Brown Tom is left behind to guard the mare. Soon after, Lili arrives to warn the attack but is captured alongside the mare after Brown Tom is knocked out. Learning what has transpired, Jack and his group make their way to the ancient temple in the marshes where Darkness resides. Though Jack deals with the swamp hag Meg Mucklebones (Robert Picardo), he and his group fall into a pit trap that takes them to dungeon where they encounter Blunder, revealed to be a dwarf, before he is dragged off by the chefs to be cooked into a pie. Luckily, Oona saves Jack and the others as they search for Lili and the mare.
Having fallen in love with Lili, believing that her sin made her his ideal woman, Darkness tempts her with his gifts. Though disgusted and scornful towards Darkness, Lili pretends to be mesmerized by him as she agrees to wed him on the condition that she kills the mare in the upcoming ritual that is to occur on sunset. At that time, having overheard Darkness's intent to cast the world into darkness, Jack and Gump learn that the demon can be destroyed by light. Returning to the banquet preparations while saving Blunder, the group take giant metal platters to design a heliotrope to reflect the sunlight to the chamber where the mare is to be sacrificed. As the ritual begins, Jack is conflicted as she appeared to be intent to kill the mare, but Lili frees the unicorn instead before she is knocked out by Darkness. Furious, Jack attacks Darkness while the others relay the light of the setting sun. Once hit by the light, gloating that he can never be truly destroyed, Darkness is propelled through a gate leading into the void. As Gump returns the stallion's horn, returning him to life, Jack retrieves the ring from the pond to awaken Lili from her enchanted rest with the world restored.
